Specify the Sleeve From the Shaft It Must Engage
MH manufactures custom splined sleeves and input shaft sleeves for transmission connections. A sleeve may have a simple outside shape while carrying a closely defined internal interface. The purchasing specification needs to describe that internal engagement, the surrounding locating surfaces and the installed length together.
Our agricultural gearbox records include a reduction-drive gear spline sleeve. The product gallery shows a separate input shaft sleeve from the wind-power portfolio. These are two documented references for sleeve sourcing, with each new design supplied against its own component requirements.
Identify What the Sleeve Does in the Assembly
A spline sleeve carries torque through its tooth flanks
The mating external spline and the sleeve's internal tooth system define the connection. The spline callout establishes the tooth geometry and fit; the surrounding diameters and faces may provide additional location or retention.
An input shaft sleeve is defined by its installation
This name identifies the sleeve's position around an input shaft. The drawing establishes whether it transmits torque, locates another member, provides a supporting interface or combines functions. Specify a plain bore, spline or other connecting form explicitly so the manufacturing review addresses the intended interface.
Usable Engagement Is Different From Overall Length
A long sleeve does not necessarily offer the same length of working spline. Lead-ins, chamfers, end relief and internal terminations can reduce the available engagement. Show the section through the sleeve and the mating shaft at its installed position, including the length over which full tooth form is required.
An open-ended internal spline and a feature terminating inside a bore present different machining-access conditions. Internal steps, nearby shoulders and the available tool relief affect the route that can be used. MH reviews these details before confirming how the internal profile will be produced.
Where the sleeve must slide during assembly or operation, identify the required travel and end clearance. Where it is retained in one position, show the relevant stop or retaining features.
Define the Internal Profile and the Outer Location
| Spline callout | Tooth form, tooth count, standard and fit designation, or a complete custom definition. |
|---|---|
| Shaft reference | The mating external spline specification and any customer-approved reference used for acceptance. |
| Working length | Full-form engagement, entry features and internal relief or termination. |
| Outside features | Locating diameters, shoulders, grooves and their required relationship to the internal profile. |
| Delivered state | Material, treatment and final surface condition at the internal teeth and mating diameters. |
Agree on Functional Fit and Dimensional Evidence
Functional gauging and dimensional measurement answer different acceptance questions. A specified spline gauge checks the relevant mating condition. Numerical measurements can document actual tooth-space dimensions or other defined features. The order should identify which results are required and how they are evaluated.
For a repeat-sourcing project, include the gauge drawing or reference, acceptance limits and reporting requirements where available. If the customer uses a mating shaft as an assembly check, define what that check establishes alongside the component drawing requirements.
MH reviews the inspection approach with the internal geometry. Gauge access, checking length and the condition of the part after treatment belong in that review. A gear accuracy grade for a meshing gear should be kept separate from the sleeve's own spline tolerance designation.
Sleeve Manufacturing With the Internal Feature in View
Turning establishes the sleeve body and its locating surfaces. Internal-profile machining, specified heat treatment and any required finishing are then selected around the sleeve section and acceptance criteria. Thin sections, changes in wall thickness and internal shoulders deserve attention when evaluating the final geometry.
The wind-power input shaft sleeve photograph provides a real example with a stepped cylindrical body and visible internal teeth. The agricultural gearbox spline sleeve is recorded separately in the technical case material. MH can review related gear-and-sleeve orders within one transmission project while retaining the individual drawing and inspection definition for each item.
Before You Order the Connecting Sleeve
What if the drawing gives only a tooth count and bore diameter?
Provide the spline form and its complete definition. Tooth count and one diameter leave the fit and tooth-space geometry incomplete for a controlled mating connection.
Can a non-standard sleeve be evaluated?
Yes. A fully defined custom internal profile can be reviewed with the section geometry and mating part. The quotation follows the assessed machining and inspection approach.
Which end details matter when replacing an existing sleeve?
Compare the usable engagement, lead-in, relief, retaining features and installed length with the mating assembly. These details can differ even when the principal spline designation is unchanged.
Send the Sleeve Section and Mating-Shaft Definition
Include the internal-profile callout, full-form length, end details and the assembly location. Add your required inspection or gauge reference and the sample and production quantities. MH can assess the connection and establish a practical manufacturing and acceptance scope.
