Product Introduction

An Input Gear Specified Around Its Mating Mesh

Sourcing a helical input gear starts with the tooth system it must engage. MH supplies cylindrical helical input gears for transmission manufacturers, using a commercial-vehicle input gear in our product portfolio as a documented manufacturing example. The angled tooth form, mating geometry and inspection definition shape the technical review for each order.

For a buyer replacing an established source, the key question is whether the new part reproduces the specified mesh. For a new gearbox design, it is whether the component definition is complete enough to cut, finish and measure the intended tooth flanks.

Four Details That Establish the Tooth Pair

1. The reference plane behind the module

Normal module and transverse module describe different sections of a helical tooth system. State which one the drawing uses, and identify the pressure-angle basis as well. Matching a nominal module number alone does not establish compatibility.

2. Helix angle and right- or left-hand teeth

Specify the angle and hand explicitly. For a conventional parallel-axis external helical pair, the mating members use opposite hands. The intended axis arrangement remains part of the gear-pair definition.

3. The direction of axial loading

The helix produces axial thrust under load. Hand and rotation affect its direction, so the bearing and locating arrangement must be considered in the gearbox design. The component order should preserve the specified orientation.

4. Intentional flank modifications

When the design calls for profile relief, lead crowning or another flank modification, supply its definition and evaluation limits. A general request for smooth running leaves the intended tooth surface open to interpretation.

What the Input-Gear Drawing Should Communicate

Basic tooth data Tooth count, module system, pressure angle, helix angle and hand.
Working flanks Modification charts, flank designation and the limits used to evaluate the tooth surface.
Tooth ends Usable face width, chamfers, edge breaks and any restricted areas.
Measurement setup Reference axis, inspection face, evaluation ranges and specified tooth-thickness measurement.
Part condition Material, delivery condition and treatment requirements for the particular input gear.

From the Documented Component to Your Input Stage

The pictured part is identified as an input cylindrical helical gear in the commercial-vehicle product portfolio. It provides a real structural reference for this product family. MH accepts drawing-led inquiries across the m1–m7 range, with the input member's tooth design and connection features determined by the ordered component.

Hobbing, heat treatment and gear grinding resources support the manufacturing review. For this component family, the discussion centers on producing the specified helix and flank geometry, preserving the required tooth-end condition, and selecting a measurement setup that reflects how the input gear is located.

Read the Inspection Results by Tooth Characteristic

Profile, helix and pitch results answer different questions. Profile evaluation examines the involute direction; helix evaluation follows the tooth across the face width; pitch evaluation addresses tooth spacing. Their evaluation ranges and permitted deviations need to match the drawing, including any intentional modifications.

MH can support this review with Klingelnberg and Gleason gear metrology resources. When transferring an existing input-gear order, a representative inspection report helps align flank conventions, plotted ranges and acceptance criteria before the first article is compared.

This is particularly useful when a nominally similar gear has a different flank specification. The required tooth surface should be carried through the drawing, finishing instruction and acceptance record.

Questions When Sourcing a Helical Input Member

Must both gears use the same helix hand?

A conventional external pair on parallel shafts uses opposite hands. Other axis arrangements need their own geometry definition. Supply the mating layout when requesting a new input member.

What should accompany a tooth-modification requirement?

Provide a marked drawing or modification chart identifying the affected flank, direction, amount, start and end positions, and evaluation limits. This gives the manufacturer a defined surface to produce and measure.

Can the existing inspection report help with second sourcing?

Yes. Together with the controlled drawing, it helps explain the customer's measurement conventions and acceptance interpretation. Any differences between the report and drawing should be resolved before first-article approval.

Start With the Tooth Data and Mating Layout

Email the input-gear drawing, tooth-data sheet and available mating-gear information. Add any flank-modification chart or representative measurement report, then state the trial order and annual demand. These documents let MH assess your input-stage component and prepare a focused sourcing response.
