Product Introduction

Planet Gears Supplied for the Carrier They Run In

MH produces custom planet gears for planetary transmission builders. Our records include axle planet gears, with further product examples in commercial-vehicle and wind-power portfolios. This page covers the individual planet components and the requirements for supplying several of them to one carrier.

In a simple planetary stage, a planet engages the central sun and the surrounding internal ring. Its supporting pin or bearing arrangement establishes another critical interface inside the bore. Sourcing therefore involves the tooth contacts, the rotating support and the relationship between the planets fitted to the assembly.

Start With the Planet Bore and Support Arrangement

The bore should be specified for the actual pin, bearing or bushing arrangement. Its diameter, form and surface requirements depend on how the gear is supported. An assembly drawing helps identify the surfaces that locate the planet radially and control its axial position.

The tooth reference must be related to that support. Eccentricity between the tooth system and the locating bore can affect the mesh as the planet turns. Where a design uses thrust washers, shoulders or other axial locating parts, include the relevant end-face requirements as well.

For manufacturing review, identify the finished locating surfaces and their condition after treatment. This focuses the quotation on the surfaces that will actually work with the carrier hardware.

Specify the Planet Set as Well as the Single Part

Several conforming gears do not automatically create the same assembly result in every planetary design. Planet tooth thickness, runout and carrier pin locations can influence load distribution. A gear supplier needs to know whether the customer accepts independently interchangeable planets or requires a defined selection or grouping method.

Interchangeable production

State the individual-part limits and inspection basis used for every planet. If no selective assembly is required, make that requirement clear so the supply plan supports the intended interchangeability.

Selected or grouped supply

If the design requires matching, define the characteristic used for selection, the permitted spread, the number of planets in a group and the identification method. MH can review these requirements with the component order; a request for "matched gears" should be accompanied by an acceptance definition.

Gear dimensional records support component acceptance. Load sharing in the assembled mechanism is evaluated with the carrier, supports and other meshing members included.

Two Product Examples, Different Planet Structures

The commercial-vehicle photograph shows a planet component with two visible toothed sections and a central opening. The wind-power photograph shows another planet configuration with a different wheel and bore arrangement. Both are taken from the documented product portfolio; they illustrate how planet construction changes with the transmission architecture.

The separate axle case record also includes planet gears among the supplied transmission components. These examples support drawing-based sourcing across the m1–m7 product range. Industrial planetary reducer projects can be evaluated against their own tooth geometry, carrier layout and delivery requirements.

Agree on the Records That Will Accompany Each Lot

Part reference Drawing revision and the planet variant or stage to which the result applies.
Bore geometry Specified size, form and relation to the gear reference, measured in the required finished condition.
Tooth results Drawing-required tooth measurements and, where applicable, the characteristic used for comparing planets.
Set identity Selection category or group identification when required, with the corresponding quantity per carrier.
Treatment evidence Required material and treatment records for the ordered planet, including relevant tooth and bore conditions.

Gear metrology and dimensional inspection resources allow the required tooth and bore checks to be reviewed together. For case-hardened planets, the treatment specification and finishing requirements also need to address the final condition of the functional surfaces.

Assembly Questions to Resolve Before Ordering

Does every planetary drive need selected planet sets?

The design and acceptance plan decide this. Some projects specify individual interchangeability; others define selection groups. The quotation should distinguish these supply methods rather than assume that every planet requires matching.

How should quantities be stated?

Give the number of planets per carrier, the number of complete assembly quantities needed, and any separately purchased spares. This makes the component demand and any grouping requirement unambiguous.

Can an existing planet be replaced on its own?

Share the drawing revision and the service or assembly requirements. Where the mechanism uses selection groups, compatibility with the remaining planets needs to be established before an individual replacement is accepted.

Plan a Planet-Gear Order Around Your Assembly Quantity

Send the planet drawing together with the carrier or pin/bearing interface, planets per assembly, and any selection rule. Include the trial assemblies, spare-part demand and production forecast. MH can then review the component features, inspection records and delivery grouping as one sourcing requirement.
