Selection Principles for Gate Valves

1. Gate valves are recommended for pipelines or installations handling high-temperature, high-pressure media. Examples include high-temperature, high-pressure pipelines in thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, and petrochemical systems.

2. Gate valves are suitable for pipelines where flow resistance requirements are not stringent, i.e., where pressure loss is not a major concern.

3. Small valves such as needle valves, instrument valves, sampling valves, and pressure gauge valves can be selected.

4. Gate valves are suitable for pipelines with flow or pressure regulation, but where high regulation accuracy is not required, and where the pipeline diameter is relatively small, such as pipelines with a nominal diameter ≤ 50mm.

5. High-pressure angle gate valves or high-pressure angle throttle valves with nominal pressures of PN160 (16MPa) or PN320 (32MPa) are recommended for small and large-scale chemical fertilizer production in the synthetic industry.

6. In the desilication workshop of the Bayer process for alumina production, and on pipelines prone to coking, direct-flow gate valves or direct-flow throttle valves with separate valve bodies, removable valve seats, and hard alloy sealing pairs are preferred.

7. In urban water supply and heating projects, for pipelines with smaller nominal diameters, gate, balancing, or piston valves can be used, such as those with a nominal diameter less than 150mm.

During opening and closing, the friction between the valve disc and the valve body sealing surface is less than that of a gate valve, making it more wear-resistant. The opening height is generally only 1/4 of the valve seat passage diameter, much smaller than that of a gate valve. Typically, there is only one sealing surface on the valve body and valve disc, resulting in better manufacturability and easier maintenance.
